The role of ambassadors

NDCN Ambassadors will:

  • be involved in at least one public engagement activity per academic year (e.g. Brain Awareness Week, the Oxford Science & Ideas Festival).
  • encourage involvement among their groups and peers
  • be able to give a good explanation of why public engagement is a good idea.

There is one Ambassador per division (CPSD, DCN, MRCBNDU, NDA and NLO [WIN already has its own scheme which is integrated with this one]). The scheme is open to DPhil students, professional services staff and research staff at all levels. Ambassadors take on the role for one year; in subsequent years, if they are still part of the Department, they should act as mentors for the next tranche of ambassadors and people interested to get involved in public engagement at NDCN.

Benefits

Ambassadors will participate in a bespoke in-house public engagement training programme, and will also be awarded £250 each from the NDCN Public Engagement Fund to spend on public engagement training from an external provider.

Here are some quotes from previous ambassadors in our Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging:

"I really enjoyed being part of the scheme. It formalised doing Public Engagement and there were really diverse projects.  I particularly valued interactions with other ambassadors."

"What I really liked about the scheme was that it gave me more confidence doing Public Engagement because I had opportunities to do it more. It also gave us the opportunity to talk through our activities with the others, which was helpful."
