\n \n \n \nTV presents one picture of an intensive care unit (ICU) \u2013 dimmed lights, hushed voices and softly bleeping machines. The reality is that it's more like a busy restaurant and frequently it's noisy enough to compete with a pneumatic drill. That's why Oxford University researchers have been trying to make intensive care noise less intensive.

\n \n \n \nA study in our Department has found that the lower-pressure environment experienced when flying increases blood pressure in the lungs. With an unknown but significant number of flights diverted each year for medical emergencies, the results could be used to improve health screening before flight as well as care for patients being moved by air.
