\n \n \n \nStroke remains the biggest cause of disability in the UK, and completely changed the life of celebrated broadcaster and political journalist Andrew Marr in 2013. The life-threatening stroke resulted in his family being told twice that he was unlikely to survive, and if he did, that he may never regain normal speech, cognitive function or movement.

\n \n \n \nResearchers at Oxford University are playing a key role in expanding the UK's network of ultra-powerful MRI machines. Oxford and Nottingham Universities have been pioneering research using so-called 'Ultra-high field' (UHF) MRI scanners, which are at the cutting edge of biomedical imaging. They are now joined by new systems in Cardiff, Cambridge and Glasgow.
