We can only accept people to study for a DPhil if they have evidence of funding for the duration of their study. On the application form you will be asked how you intend to fund your studies. If you are awaiting a decision from a possible funding body, or if such a body requires a letter of acceptance from the University then you can still apply, but any offer will be conditional on funding being secured. Please note that in order to commence your studies in October 2019, your prospective college will require you to confirm your funding arrangements by 31st July 2019.


Every year the Medical Sciences Division offers a number of fully funded 3-year DPhil studentships to outstanding applicants of any nationality. These studentships are funded by a number of organisations including the Wellcome Trust, MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, CR-UK, British Heart Foundation, the Clarendon Fund, Oxford Colleges and a number of other charities. If successful, the fully-funded studentships will cover fees and provide a stipend at the standard Research Council rate.

Please note that the selection of highly-ranked applicants for these studentships is a competitive process across the whole Division so applicants are encouraged to consider alternative sources of funding. See the University website for information about other Graduate Scholarships.


Project title: The role of the brain neurovascular unit in dementia pathogenic mechanisms

Supervisor: Dr Zameel Cader

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly driven candidates who wish to pursue studies for a fully funded DPhil (PhD) degree in the biology of neurovascular function in dementias at the University of Oxford. The research will focus on human induced pluripotent stem cell models of the blood-brain-barrier. The models will be developed from healthy subject iPSC lines or patients with dementia associated gene variants and then exposed to disease relevant perturbations. The disease mechanisms and effect on neurovascular interactions will be explored using molecular profiling and functional assays such as calcium imaging and multi-electrode array recordings. As such the project will offer training in a sophisticated set of methodologies and ample opportunities for collaboration: The Cader laboratory is part of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences and based at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine and Dunn School of Pathology. The project will be carried out within a broader EU-wide network of collaborations including substantial interactions with leading pharmaceutical industries, specifically as part of the IM2PACT project.

Candidates are expected to have demonstrated an ability to work effectively in the laboratory, a strong background in molecular biology and experience in stem cell technologies and an excellent undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. biochemistry, cell biology or neuroscience). An undergraduate 1st class or upper 2nd class degree (or equivalent grade) is required for graduate entry into Oxford. The minimum standards for English apply for applicants. Funding will cover living expenses and course fees up to the value of a Home/EU student.
