I am a DPhil student working with Dr. Charlotte Stagg and Prof. Heidi Johansen-Berg.
I hope to study the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), applied to the motor cortex, while people learn new motor tasks. I plan to examine how this form of non-invasive brain stimulation affects people's ability to learn motor skills over short periods of time, and how it affects their memory for these skills when tested later. I also hope to investigate the neurochemical changes which occur after tDCS; changes which could be important in mediating its behavioural effects. This research will provide us with a greater understanding of the mechanisms of tDCS, and may assist in the development of new rehabilitation techniques for patients with hemiparesis post stroke.
