Cristina Martinez

Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Cristina is a postdoctoral research scientist specializing in gene therapy for retinal diseases. Since 2016, she has been an integral member of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford, where she focuses on developing advanced gene therapies for inherited retinal dystrophies, particularly X-linked retinitis pigmentosa. Cristina also serves as the Local Biological Safety Officer for retinal gene therapy studies at Oxford University Hospitals NHS.
Cristina completed her PhD in Biotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where she explored the roles of oxidative stress and inflammation in retinitis pigmentosa. Her research involved setting up innovative models using porcine and macaque eyes, alongside cell lines, to study retinal function and disease.
Her work has been widely published in leading scientific journals, and also recognized with numerous awards, including the Ruskell Medal (2023) for outstanding research in ophthalmology and the Thomas Willis Intermediate Career Researcher Prize (2023) from the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences.
