Michael studied clinical medicine at the University of Cambridge before undertaking an academic foundation program at the University of Glasgow. Following this, he joined the Moorfields / North Thames training scheme in ophthalmology. He is currently a Wellcome trust clinical research training fellow at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology and honorary registrar to Moorfields Eye Hospital.
