Honorary Clinical Research Fellow

  • Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Sher Aslam is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in vitreoretinal surgery. He is working within the Defence Medical Services and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

After graduating from the University of Southampton, followed by officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he trained in London before completing a DPhil at the University of Oxford. He subsequently completed vitreoretinal fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital before assuming a Consultant post at the Oxford Eye Hospital.

Sher’s research has investigated methods of neuroprotection and transplanting cone photoreceptors. The latter cell type is primarily lost in diseases affecting the macula including age-related macular degeneration and end-stage retinitis pigmentosa. During his DPhil, his work concentrated on developing a treatment that would prevent cone cell loss as well as designing a method of cone transplantation following disease or injury. His current research interest continues on these topics and he is a Clinical Research Fellow in the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology as well as Senior Lecturer within the Academic Department of Military Surgery and Trauma.
