Significance We report, across 3 complementary studies, that attention in visual working memory leads to top-down modulations of the pupillary response, in the absence of any visual input or anticipation of any change in brightness. These findings strengthen the view of the sensory recruitment, all the way down to the earliest synapses in the visual system. The thought-provoking corollary to our findings is that the pupils provide a reliable measure of what is in the focus of the mind.
