Dr. Abhinav Sharma

Postdoctoral Neuroscientist

Abhinav received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from India, where he worked at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore, India. During this undergraduate degree he built machine learning models to target structural and functional changes in Schizophrenia.

He then pursued a master's degree in biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA, where he collaborated with Dr. Steven Chase and Dr. Aryn Gittis. Together, they designed a device to study gait dynamics in mice to target behavior controlled by brain stem and basal ganglia neural circuits.

He finished his Ph.D. in computer science at HHU Duesseldorf and the Uniklinik Duesseldorf, primarily working with Dr. Esther Florin. For his Ph.D. he developed principled frameworks for combining different unsupervised machine learning algorithms to study invasive and non-invasive electrophysiological recordings in humans.

Following his Ph.D., he worked with Dr. Jan Hirschmann and Dr. Alfons Schnitzler. Together, they developed models to predict optimal deep brain stimulation settings using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings.

Currently Abhinav is a postdoctoral neuroscientist working with Dr. Ashwini Oswal at the MRC BNDU.

His research interests have coalesced around the application and advancement of latent state space and machine learning models. He is driven by the goal of discerning the distinct effects of electrical and pharmacological neuromodulation in diverse neurological conditions. His overarching mission is to harness the power of technology to tailor interventions and improve the lives of individuals affected by brain disorders.
