Green Impact is an award-winning programme that breaks down the often complex world of sustainability into practical steps that staff and students can take to improve sustainable practice within their building, department or college. Teams work towards actions in an online toolkit that align with the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy, earning points towards a final award level.
40 teams achieved awards for their efforts to improve sustainability in 15 key areas including; biodiversity, waste management, carbon, resource use and energy.
Actions which helped earn the silver award this year were a mixture of sustainable practices already in place alongside actions supporting the University's environmental campaigns and new initiatives. These included:
- Arranging visits from the Bike Doctor to the JR site to promote cycling and bike safety
- Connecting sustainability and wellbeing through regular plant and book swap events at termly coffee mornings and a series of talks on planet-friendly eating from Tiziana, our resident nutritionist.
- Working with the Facilities team to explore sustainable purchasing of lab equipment through Warp-It and eBay.
- Introducing new recycling stations at JR sites: Level 6 kitchen, OxCIN (FMRiB building), CPSD (Wolfson Building)
- Volunteering for a pilot scheme to replacement lights on Level 6 with more energy efficient LEDs.
- Embedding our commitment to sustainability on all NDCN job descriptions
The NDCN Green Impact team has expanded over the last year to widen the reach of activity beyond Level 6 of the JR to include OxSTAR, OxCIN, and BNDU.
