We are a world leader in retinal gene therapy, with our Clinical Ophthalmology Research Group running successful trials for three major eye conditions: choroideremia, retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration.

Research impact

Our researchers led the first clinical trials of gene therapy for two inherited diseases leading to blindness. This was the first time gene therapy had reversed visual field loss in retinitis pigmentosa, and led to the formation of a spinout company, Nightstar.
