The Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders Clinical trials unit is a hybrid unit combining the strengths and longstanding research tradition from both Oxford University and Oxford University Hospitals.

Our group aims to deliver the highest quality translational and clinical research within both investigator- and commercial-led clinical trials with a focus on relieving the disease burden on people with multiple sclerosis (MS), but also in other neuro-immunological conditions, such and neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorder (NMOSD), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein associated disorder (MOGAD), myasthenia gravis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common cause of progressive disability in young adults in the Western world. It is characterised by inflammatory demyelinating of the central nervous system (CNS) and neurodegeneration. Over the past 20 years our Unit has participated in key trials that led to the development of new therapies targeting inflammation in relapsing remitting and secondary progressive MS and has joined the MS community to support research on progressive MS, by engaging in a large portfolio of collaborative clinical trial research as part of a national and international network of MS researchers and Pharmaceutical companies.

Our group has contributed to help differentiate MS from other inflammatory demyelinating conditions of the CNS, using a combination of advanced imaging and other biomarkers. Our team is invested in gathering evidence for treatment and management of NMOSD and MOGAD, in close collaboration with the national Highly Specialized NMO service.

Our trials unit has also promoted research in other autoimmune conditions such as myasthenia gravis.

Our team of Neurology consultants, experienced research nurses and admin staff is keen to support academic and investigator led studies, research fellowships and actively promotes patient engagement in research.
