Precision neuroimaging of the hippocampal system and anatomically inspired cognitive neuroscience.

The Anatomical Basis of Cognition (ABC) lab investigates the development, evolution, and functional properties of brain circuits supporting human cognition. We are particularly interested in the complex neuroanatomy of the hippocampal system - its subregions, distributed circuitry, and functional roles in multiple cognitive domains, such as perception, episodic memory, and social cognition. Our lab uses individualized, precision neuroimaging at 7-Tesla, longitudinal sampling, comparative neuroanatomy, and computational and cognitive phenotyping. We leverage this multimodal approach to track how anatomy and cognition differ across species, emerge over development, and change within individuals. 

Robust and replicable cognitive neuroscience is at the heart of what we do. Therefore, we invest significant effort into developing novel MR tools at ultrahigh fields to reliably study brain regions located in the anterior medial temporal lobe - entorhinal cortex, perirhinal cortex, amygdala, and anterior hippocampus - which suffer from significant signal loss and distortion in MRI. Moreover, since we strongly advocate for biologically meaningful interpretability of human neuroimaging findings, our hypotheses and interpretations are heavily anchored in ground-truth animal anatomy and connectivity.
