Consultant in anaesthetics and pain management

I am a consultant in anaesthesia and pain management at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, having trained in London before moving to Oxford.  I am past secretary of the Acute Pain Special Interest Group (APSIG) for the International Association for the Study of Pain and past chair of APSIG of the British Pain Society. I sit on the editorial board of the British Journal of Pain, am on the organising committee of the National Acute Pain Symposium and am an expert advisor to the Beyond Pills All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG).

I have a clinical and research interest in prescribed opioid dependence and run a clinic supporting pain patients to reduce long-term high-dose opioids.  I also have an interest around the safe prescribing of opioids in postoperative pain to avoid the conversion to long-term use, with a focus on opioid stewardship.

I initiated and continue to organise meetings of OxPain: a collaboration of pain-interested clinicians and researchers in Oxford.

In 2025 I delivered the British Pain Society Lecture at the Annual Scientific Meeting, and in 2026 I was presented with a British Pain Society Recognition Award for my work in acute pain and opioid stewardship.
