NDCN’s Senior Staff* came together on Thursday 28 November to discuss internal funding schemes and Department finances.

Heidi Johansen-Berg opened the meeting, chairing a discussion about internal funding opportunities with colleagues from the Medical Sciences Division.

Adelyn Wise, Research Funding Manager, highlighted the John Fell Fund which offers different types of awards each term in the categories of: pump-priming; early career researcher; networks; matched funding for external bids; and research assets. Oliver Rughani-Hindmarsh, Translational Research Co-ordinator, introduced us to the Translational Research Office (TRO) who administrate the Medical and Life Sciences Translational Fund (MLSTF). This funds researchers to accelerate the transition from discovery research to translational development projects and now offers a dedicated route for early career researchers.

Both presenters shared statistics on NDCN's recent success in securing internal funding and shared good practice in making an outstanding application.

The second discussion of the day, led by Professor David Bennett, was dedicated to finance. Moira Westwood, NDCN’s Head of Administration and Finance, provided a ‘back to basics’ explanation of departmental finances, including how income is generated, the mechanisms for allocating income and costs, how FEC (Full Economic Cost) rates are calculated, and the concept of overhead recovery rates. We reflected on the financial challenges that the department faces and actions that we can collectively take to contribute to our ongoing financial health.
