MRI of brain plasticity

Brain plasticity is defined as the process by which synapses, neurons and glia, and whole circuits, adapt to changes in the environment. The last 25 years have shown that plasticity creates an imprint on the brain detectable at the mesoscopic resolution of MRI. Here we explore the history of MRI-detectable brain plasticity, discuss key findings as well as limitations, provide an overview of its cellular and molecular bases, and outline future directions.
