FSL Course
FSL is a software package used for analysing MRI-based neuroimaging data. It is widely used around the world and covers analysis of structural, diffusion, task-based and resting-state fMRI data. This intensive 5-day course covers both the theory and practice of functional and structural brain image analysis and is aimed to teach researchers from a wide variety of backgrounds how to use FSL to analyse such data.
- The FSL Course is typically held once a year and there is a fee for registration. As the venue changes with each course, details are not announced until all details about the course are finalised. Announcements for new courses are posted on the main FMRIB and FSL websites, as well as being sent to the FSL list and NITRC news feed.
- Background concepts and the practicalities of analyses are taught in detailed lectures; these are interleaved with hands-on practical sessions where attendees learn how to carry out analysis for themselves on real data.
- After completing the course, attendees should be able to analyse their own FMRI and MRI data sets. The course is aimed at both new and existing users of FSL and will cover both basic and advanced features. Major topics covered are:
- Functional MRI – GLM-based analysis (FEAT) and model-free (ICA) analysis of task and resting data (MELODIC);
- Structural MRI – registration (FLIRT/FNIRT), brain extraction and tissue-type segmentation (BET/FAST), and analysis of structural change (FIRST, FSL-VBM, SIENA);
- Diffusion MRI – probabilistic tractography (FDT) and voxelwise multi-subject analysis (TBSS).
- This course is often combined with a 1-day FreeSurfer component: the FSL and FreeSurfer Course.
- There is no assessment on the FSL Course.
