Quantification of Parkinson's Disease
Max is an academic doctor in neurosurgery, artificial intelligence, space medicine, and rare diseases. He trained in medicine at Bristol (clinical) and Oxford (academic), and is currently working towards DPhil in Clinical Neurosciences. His academic work focuses on objective quantification of neurological disorders, treatment for rare parkinsonian diseases and the use of AI in clinical practice. He’s been recognised for several clinical, academic and teaching achievements, including National Clinical Neurosciences Award, Harvey Cushing Gold Medal, BGS, Arctic Medicine, and Wellcome Trust scholarships.
In 2021, he has been granted a prestigious Clarendon Scholarship (top 2% of all applicants across university) and, as the best doctoral applicant in medicine, received a fully funded University of Oxford's MSD studentship for his degree. He was a University of Oxford Medical School DGH Tutor of the Year in 2020 (Student choice) and a youngest person ever to be elected the President of the Oxford Neurological Society.
He is a current (2023/4) Men's Captain of Reuben Boat Club. He represented the college in Henley Royal Regatta Prince Albert's Cup in 2023. In 2022/23 he was Men's Captain of the Linacre Boat Club (Linacre, Reuben, Nuffield) and led the team to the highest position on the river in club's history. Other rowing achievements include winning Vets HoRR and Henley T&V Regatta.
His work has been shared through lectures, tutorials, and public presentations in several countries, always gripping his audience attention with dark humour, dynamic expression, and active gesticulation. He is a current tutor in medicine at Jesus and Oriel colleges.
Max is a member of Neurometrology lab, which is a multidisciplinary team of academics, engineers, and clinicians, developing novel and more accurate ways of disease and symptom assessment.
Neuroscience is not all about a shaking arm or a spastic muscle. Behind every Parkinson's disease, there is a unique and infinitely interesting person, who experiences a wide range of symptoms in their very own, inimitable way.
Sometimes the intricate function of the brain goes wrong. My research focuses on finding where that fault is and how to fix it. I want to achieve this by blending engineering and medicine to produce technological solutions that can assess Parkinsonian diseases in terms of movement, cognition, memory, and executive function.
Our group achieves that by developing a battery of physical, memory, and eye movement exercises using wearable sensors and body trackers. The data output is then analysed to work out patterns, correlations, and new methods of assessment, which will eventually replace human examination in clinic.
I want to create a world where every patient will get a comprehensive assessment of their disease at home; using our sensors and devices, with clinicians receiving a rigorously researched and objective report of symptoms. The time usually spent on tedious neurological examination in clinic can instead be used to discuss what's important for the individual.
