DPhil Student and Mabel Churn Scholar
Biography
Julia-Sophia received her medical degree from the University of Witten/Herdecke and the University of Tübingen. During medical school, Julia-Sophia was a scholarship student of the German Academic Scholarship foundation and was awarded funding by the Claussen Simon Foundation to undertake a research project at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology focusing on gene therapy for retinitis pigmentosa. She was awarded the Carl Liebermeister prize from the University of Tübingen for her graduate research thesis, which she completed with summa cum laude. Before pursuing her DPhil, Julia-Sophia worked at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin as a junior doctor.
She is currently working toward a DPhil in Clinical Neuroscience under the supervision of Professor Robert MacLaren. Her research focuses on utilising CRISPR-Cas9 for the treatment of inherited retinal degenerations, including retinitis pigmentosa.
Outside of medicine, Julia-Sophia enjoys playing the violin, particularly in a chamber music setting, and she holds a Bachelor of Music in violin performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
