Many congratulations to Postdoctoral Researcher and Junior Research Fellow Dr Bjorn Vahsen who has been awarded the Junior Research Prize by Deutche Gesellschaft fur Muskelkranke e.V. (DGM) - The German Society for Muscular Diseases.
The prize awards 2,500 euros annually to a scientist under the age of 35. The prize was awarded to Dr Vahsen for his paper ‘C9orf72-ALS human iPSC microglia are proinflammatory and toxic to co-cultured motor neurons via MMP9’, which was published in Nature Communications in September 2023.
Founded in 1965, DGM has around 10,000 members and is the largest and oldest self-help organisation for people with neuromuscular diseases in Germany.

Dr Vahsen said:
“I am absolutely delighted to receive the Junior Research Prize from the DGM. This recognition highlights our recently published work on the pathophysiological role of microglia in C9orf72-ALS. It is incredibly rewarding to have my contributions acknowledged, and this prize further motivates me to continue my investigations into new therapeutic strategies for ALS.”
