NDCN has been awarded a renewal of its Athena SWAN Silver Award. This award is a strong endorsement of NDCN’s work to improve gender equality and build a positive research culture.

The Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advance gender equality in higher education and research. The application involves a detailed analysis of staff, student and survey data to identify where we have made progress and areas for further work, with respect to a range of areas including recruitment, induction, career progression, funding applications, professional development, and support for career breaks.

The Silver Award recognises the impact that our work has had on the career development of individuals within the department and in working towards an open and fair workplace culture. The application also includes an ambitious action plan, setting out a number of objectives for the department to continue this work over the coming five years.

Our sincere thanks to NDCN’s Athena SWAN Academic Lead during this process, Associate Professor Katja Wiech, Staff Development Coordinator, Jessica Hedge, and all in the Staff Development Committee and the NDCN Administration Team for their hard work in preparing our application. Finally, thank you to everyone in NDCN who contributed to the application through participating in surveys and focus groups, providing case studies, and reviewing the draft application.
