In 2024 Professor Robert MacLaren was ranked in the top 100 ophthalmologists worldwide by the international Ophthalmologist magazine.

Robert MacLaren

The ranking was based on votes from key leaders across ophthalmology, academia and industry. Robert is the only UK ophthalmologist outside of London and one of only ten retinal surgeons worldwide to be included on this list.

Robert currently leads the Gene and Cell Therapy Research at the OUH NHS Foundation Trust, through the Biomedical Research Centre. Many of his achievements have been first in human gene therapy clinical trials for blindness that he has led successfully on the John Radcliffe Hospital campus.

Robert said: 'I am delighted that our work in Oxford has been recognised by this international committee. Oxford is the ideal place for first in human clinical trials. We have the ideal mix of world-leading scientists including Nobel laureates and highly specialised expert clinicians - all supported by outstanding clinical research governance teams.'
