The Sir Roger Bannister Prize competition rewards undergraduate medical students who excel in the study of neuroscience. Sir Roger, as well as being known for completing a mile run under four minutes, was also a neurologist. His academic work was mostly concerned with the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular physiology, and multiple system atrophy.
The prize is held annually in memory of Sir Roger's lifetime of work. This year's judges were Dr Enrico Flossmann and Dr Ursula Schulz.
The winner was Julia Buckland (Keble College), with Jaskiran Matharu (University College) as runner up. Julia commented: 'I had such a positive experience in the viva and really enjoyed the opportunity to talk through various neurological cases with Dr Flossmann and Dr Schulz, both of whom I am very grateful to. It is a real honour to be awarded this prize and to celebrate Sir Roger’s legacy, and I am feeling even more inspired and excited to pursue neurosciences further in the future!'
