Ruth Geraldes

Consultant Neurologist

  • Highly Specialized Service NMO and MS trials Unit at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Oxford University Hospitals Oxford, UK and Neurology department Frimley Foundation Health Trust, UK

As a Senior Clinical Research fellow at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Oxford University, my research is focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of people with inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system especially multiple sclerosis (MS), Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum disorders (NMO) and Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein associated Disorder (MOGAD). After my DPhil Project at Oxford University on the interaction of MS and vascular disease, through neuropathology and imaging studies, I have set up and taken part of several research projects investigating the effect of vascular risk factors on NMOSD and MOGAD clinical and imaging outcomes, comparing imaging between MS and NMO, looking for predictors of MOGAD relapses.

I am a Consultant Neurologist at the Oxford University Hospitals (OUH), leading the MS trials Unit and serving as the Deputy Lead for the National Highly Specialized Service for NMO. I am the PI for several commercial and non-commercial/ investigator led studies and help promote clinical, translational research and foster national and international collaborations.

I am a Neurology Consultant at Frimley Health Foundation Trust where I helped set up multidisciplinary care for more than one thousand people with MS and giving them access to participate in research (e.g. OPTIMISE Study, EPIC THRIVE project, CONSENTOR). I am the Kent Surrey and Sussex NIHR lead for Neurology and Neurodegeneration. I actively participate in post-graduate teaching and I have published several peer-reviewed papers (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/1BW6zijtzgHAO/bibliography/public/)
