Sukhdeep Bal

PhD

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Research Summary

I am currently a NIHR-funded post-doctoral fellow at Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN) and Center for prevention of Stroke and Dimentia (CPSD) , University of Oxford.

There are two major themes to my research:

(i) Utilizing novel Deep Leaning (AI) methods as well as mathematical variational methods in Medical Imaging (Brain MRI/CT) to develop imaging tools for clinicians to apply to individual patient diagnoses.

(ii)  Developing structural Image segmentation, registration and denoising methods using variational and AI methods.

Here at CPSD, we are developing an automated CT-brain analysis tool, which can aid NHS clinicians in diagnosis, prognosis, and old patient care. The resulting semi-automated CT-brain analysis tool will facilitate large-scale studies of how brain ageing relates to cognitive decline.

I completed my Dual PhD in Applied Mathematics (https://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3171310/) with University of Liverpool ( UK ) and National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan)  before moving to University of Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher.

Teaching and Training

I have been involved in teaching several undergraduate and graduate courses (Engineering Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Calculus, Statistics and Probability, Math’s research skills) at the Department of Mathematics, University of Liverpool, UK.

Recently, I have been awarded Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK (AFHEA).
