Bruce is a practicing anaesthetist, an international expert in peri-operative risk, and currently Professor in the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.
His research interests include perioperative medicine, perioperative outcomes and global surgery. He is a proponent of collaborative research to improve public health. He collaborates with the African Perioperative Research Group (APORG) which has delivered the African Surgical Outcomes Study (ASOS), the ASOS-2 Trial, the African Covid-19 Critical Care Outcomes Study (ACCCOS), the African Surgical Outcomes Study in Paediatric patients (ASOS-Paeds), and the African Critical Illness Outcomes Study (ACIOS). He is the co-Lead for the NIHR Global Health Group on Perioperative and Critical Care.
Bruce recently published a book titled Safer surgery for Africa: Challenges and Solutions. He is married with two children. He is an avid endurance cyclist having ridden the Race Across South Africa, a self-navigated mapping mountain biking race, and the Rhino Run.
Bruce spent time in the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics from 2005-2008 so knows Oxford well. We look forward to giving him a warm welcome.
