A meeting for people living with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) and their carers, with the aim of sharing the latest developments in research, treatment and practical support.

The 2nd UK PLS Day, hosted by Professor Martin Turner, took place on Wednesday 25 September 2024 at the Thatched Barn Research Centre, Christ Church, Oxford.

The Oxford PLS experience - David Lester

David Lester is a Neurology Registrar currently undertaking a DPhil in the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. His research focuses on protein biomarkers and clinical cohort analyses.

 

Diagnosing PLS - Martin Turner

Martin Turner is Professor of Clinical Neurology & Neuroscience in the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, and Consultant Neurologist to the John Radcliffe Hospital, working alongside the MND Clinic team. His research focus is on biomarker discovery to accelerate drug discovery.

 

Measuring movement for trials - Emma Hodson-Tole

Emma Hodson-Tole is Professor of Neuromuscular Biomechanics in Manchester Metropolitan University's Department of Life Sciences. Her research focuses on developing new ways of measuring skeletal muscle health and changes in physical ability, with the aim of improving MND diagnosis and the evaluation of potential new treatments.

 

Practical support in PLS - Phillippa Sharpe

Phillippa Sharpe is a Specialist Occupational Therapist at the Oxford MND Care and Research Centre, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Phillippa has worked in continuing disability management; social services; palliative care and Assistive Technology teams for over 15 years. Her research interests focus on how people adapt and change their activities whilst living with MND.

 

The USA PLS registry and beyond - Sabrina Paganoni

Sabrina Paganoni is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and co-Director of the Neurological Clinical Research Institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. Her research focuses on innovation in clinical trials to accelerate the development of new treatments for people living with motor neuron disease.

 

Psychological support in PLS - Dr Rachel Woolrich

Rachel Woolrich is Principal Clinical Psychologist at the Oxford MND Care & Research Centre. She focuses on the psychological assessment and support of patients and carers attending the MND clinic, and is interested in understanding the psychological needs of patients and carers living with PLS. She also works with another neurological condition called NF2.
