Grant Funding for NDCN Engagement Team – Explanation for researchers:

The department requires all researchers to meaningfully involve external stakeholders and, where appropriate, integrate lived experience perspective in their work. The nature and extent of this engagement should be tailored to the specific project, with patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) appropriate for clinical and translational research, and broader public engagement (PE) activities (that can also include involvement) suitable for all research including methods development and fundamental research.

To support researchers in meeting these obligations effectively, all grant applications should include a small percentage FTE allocation (equivalent to 1 day per year) for our engagement team's services, whenever such allocations are an allowable cost request on the grant. This baseline resource provides access to specialised expertise in planning and implementing engagement activities appropriate to your research context, without diverting focus from core research activities.

Projects requiring more extensive engagement support (beyond the baseline 1 day per year) should be discussed with the Engagement Team, who will advise on appropriate additional costs and provide support in developing comprehensive, project-specific engagement plans and text for your application.

Boilerplate Text for Justification of Resources (to put in your grant):

To facilitate meaningful public engagement throughout this research project, we include a small percentage FTE allocation (equivalent to 1 day per year) for our departmental engagement team. This dedicated resource provides value-added support beyond standard institutional resourcing by offering specialised expertise tailored to our project's specific needs, including: [adapt the following to your project context*]

  • For patient-oriented research: Recruiting diverse participants with lived experience, facilitating stakeholder workshops and focus groups, and advising on co-production methodologies to ensure authentic patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE)
  • For methods development and fundamental research: Designing public engagement activities that effectively communicate complex concepts, identifying appropriate engagement formats and audiences, and supporting activities such as public lectures, science festivals, and educational partnerships
  • For all research: Strategic planning of engagement activities, development of engagement materials, evaluation of engagement impact, and ensuring alignment with funder requirements

Whilst this baseline allocation facilitates comprehensive engagement, [projects requiring substantial PPIE activities should include additional costing here - consult with the Engagement Team]. This approach enhances research quality and impact whilst efficiently meeting funders' expectations for meaningful public engagement, ultimately delivering greater value and societal benefit from the funded research.
